Your Instrument Panel In Your Vehicle

There are a lot of measuring gadgets if you take a look at your car’s dashboard. This whole panel with all the measuring device on it is called the instrument panel. The main function of the instrument panel is to make sure that the drivers will see the light indicators that are indicatory of car problems. The light indicators may blink or may not light at all and the arrows will move to indicate if your car’s oil pressure and fuel are still okay or not so you can have it checked.

The thing that would come into your mind is how do these indicators get the information from different car parts. The answer is that there is the instrument panel working hand-in-hand with the engine computer. Information gathered within different car parts is done by the engine computer and then the reading will be shown on the instrument cluster.

What are these car computer parts that are used in getting information? One of them is the ECU, which checks the temperature of the coolant. There is also the transmission controller that will take care of the vehicle’s speed.

From these parts, it will then send the data that has been collected to the communications bus. The engine computer parts send out different data that has two parts. The first part is called the header. This is a numeric value that recognizes the type of data being sent. For example, the engine computer is going to send temperature or speed data, the communications bus will recognize it as such.

The next part is called the data. This is now the numeric value that is corresponding to the exact information value. For example the temperature is 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, the data that is going to be sent to the communications bus is also 200.

This information will then be distributed to the proper gauges of the instrument panel straight from the communications bus. Henceforth, this is the information you will see when you are driving.

Because of the important role that the instrument panel plays in your vehicle, you have to make sure that the instrument cluster is doing its job right. For this, you have to schedule regular maintenance to check the calibration to make sure that the reading is accurate so you?re safe while driving.

This is the whole process on how information are being relayed from the engine computers to the instrument panel to give the reading. With this, you can see that every part of the car is working together to let you know if something is wrong with your car.
