Beach Cruiser Bikes – The Baby Boomer’s New Friend
When I was a young teenager I had a beach cruiser bike and I loved it. It was my mode of transportation and took me just about everywhere I needed to go. It had wide tires so it was easy to ride on gravel and dirt and even took you over the sand at the beach with no problem. I believe that was how it originally got it’s name, beach cruiser, due to the fact it was the best bike for riding along the sandy beach shoreline.
Big tires make the beach cruiser easy to pedal and it is a one gear bicycle; so no confusion how to change gears and trying to figure out which gear to use. There is no difficulty pedaling up hills because of the large tires and sprocket. Just pedal a little harder and up the hill you go.
The one speed beach cruiser still comes with the easy to use old fashioned brakes. You just push back on the pedal and come to an easy stop. With the one speed beach cruiser, there are no hand brakes so you don’t have to worry about keeping your hand over the brake lever while you are riding.
The beach cruiser bike also comes with straight handle bars so no back discomfort from hunching over to hold on. You can pretend you’re a kid again and ride “the no hands way”, Well until you have to make a turn. Then you just grab the handles and contol the bike around corners. The new beach cruiser has such a solid frame and structure that it makes it easy to ride with no hands.
Another reason to buy a beach cruiser bike is it’s comfy seat. It’s actually an expansive saddle like seat, comfortable for your tush, unlike other bicycle seats. Beach cruiser bike seats are wide, expansive and very well cushioned. It is all these features that make the beach cruiser bike the best comfort bike you can ride. Add these features up and they make the beach cruiser the best comfort bike on the market.
Now let’s fast forward to present day. I mentioned that the beach cruiser is the best comfort bike on the market, with the same features you remember when you were a kid, only better. Comfort is now my number one priority and the beach cruiser bike still meets the criteria. I am now a baby boomer, a little older and a little grayer, but a lot wiser and I know a good thing when I see it. The bike in my garage that I now ride is a newer beach cruiser bike. On the outside I may not look 16 but when I ride my beach cruiser bike I still feel young and free and when you see me, you’re watching one cool grandma riding into the sunset.
