Crown Victoria Reborn

One of the most well known names in autodom is poised to get its first major overhaul in nearly thirty years. Ford’s Crown Victoria, introduced in 1979, has had only small changes since its introduction, but a new plan by Ford to overhaul the crown jewel of its fleet is reputedly in the offing. Thanks to central authority help – Australian basically – the new Crown Victoria will be a clean break from this model and will help to spawn additional models for brothers Mercury and Lincoln. Yes, you may not have considered a Crown Victoria up to this point, but the approaching new “Crown Vic” may change change your mind about that.

You have to go back all the way to the late 1970s to when “downsizing” was a term used by the vehicle industry to explain a shell game where giant automobiles were dropped down a nick in size to sit on a platform rather smaller than the prior model. Indeed, across the 1970s Ford’s full size offerings the LTD/Galaxie 500 were enormous beasts of burden. When the point the then new Galaxie five hundred Crown Victoria was released at the end of the decade, Ford was playing catch up to General Motors who had earlier mastered the entire downsizing strategy.

Initially, the Crown Victoria had a broad appeal for drivers wanting a giant automobile with all of the trappings. As time went buy the vehicle grew less and less desirable as buyer tastes modified, but the Crown Victoria’s style didn’t. As a pursuit, presidency, or fleet vehicle the Crown Victoria has done very well, but Ford has only made modest enhancements to the automobile over the years. Indeed, America’s two automaker has made significant investments in trucks, vans, SUVS and select autos, but the Crown Victoria quickly began to show its age. Today’s model is awfully outmoded and it hasn’t had a comprehensive refreshing in more than ten years, so an overhaul is warranted.

Ford’s impetus for change is coming from an improbable source : a foreign government. According to news sources, Ford’s Australian operation has received a $1.4 bln Grant from Australia to build a production and research facility that will be used to design and build several new models. One of the Australian cars slated to gain from this move will be the Ford Falcon, a full sized car that will become the root of the all-new Crown Victoria.

While some have theorized that the the new Crown Victoria will be built in Australia and imported to the U.S., this is unlikely to happen. Instead, Ford will expand the Falcon’s production to at least one U.S. Plant, make some technical refinements, and sell the auto as a Crown Victoria. It’s going to be focused to police departments and fleet buyers essentially with some residual sales for personal buyers. In addition, the Crown Victoria will spawn a new Mercury Gran Marquis while a marginally stretched and lots more classy version of the automobile will become the replacement for the present Lincoln Town Car.

Yes, the Crown Victoria is well past its useful age. Thanks to some assistance from down under, the 2010 model should be a refreshing change. At least Ford hopes you may think so.

Dodge New Exciting Cars

If you are a car fan you know fun of the fun of following the market is examining new models as they enter the showroom. There’s just something special about a new auto : the smell, the look, the price tag! For some 17,000,000 Yank drivers a new automobile is in their future, while many others go for the used auto market. Some of the automobiles on the market today are hot, hot, hot! Let’s have a look at several new and future offerings from Dodge.

Thanks in part to new ownership [Daimler Benz acquired the Chrysler Corporation in 1998] a fresh infusion of great looking Dodge models have hit a showroom near you. Additional models are soon to appear and the makeover that Dodge has been receiving is nothing but strange. These are some of my favorites:

Magnum – Who said a station lorry should resemble a family hauler? The Magnum sure doesn’t. With an intimidating grille and a rakish exterior, the Magnum is a real man pleaser while also giving girls a bit extra room in the back to haul stuff. Throw in a Hemi and the Magnum really rocks!

Charger – Okay, so the new Charger has 4 doors. Well, you can not have everything. You can have macho looks, a powerful engine, and an automobile that is sure to fight against anything that Japan or Germany throws its way. Word has it that DaimlerChrysler is considering a coupe version. Now, wouldn’t that be cool!

Caliber – Bye, bye Neon. The Neon served Dodge well, but it isn’t in the same caliber as the Caliber. Pun intended. To get introduced in Spring 2006 as a 2007 model, the Caliber will have 3 engine choices: 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4 I4s, a continuously available transaxle, and all wheel drive. In addition, 2.0L diesel engines should be available outside of the North American market – why not here? – as DaimlerChrysler sets to introduce the Dodge name into new markets.

Other Dodge vehicles that are getting spotted include the Ram and Dakota pick up wagons, the Durango SUV and the soon to be introduced Dodge Nitro, the division’s version of the compact Jeep Liberty. Oh, yep, who could forget the 510-hp V10 Viper? Are you say, Corvette beater?

One word you can’t associate with Dodge any more is the word, “boring.” Exciting cars, trucks, and SUVs for a market craving these types of hot vehicles. I think the “ram” insignia truly does befit the name.

New Dodge Upcoming Models

DaimlerChrysler’s Dodge division has actually been making a name for itself during the past decade. No longer in the shadow of Chrysler or a carbon copy of Plymouth, Dodge has its own automobiles stamped with its own unique personality. The Charger is Dodge’s latest hot model; what can Dodge do for an encore? Read on for all the exciting details!

Caliber – The compact Neon is dead and a replacement automobile is waiting in the wings by the name of Caliber. Sporting Dodge’s signature crosshair grille, the Caliber seems like a Chrysler Pacifica but it is in the Chrysler PT Cruiser’s size range. This 5 door wagon-like vehicle features jacked up wheel arches and a sloped roofline that tapers off to a rear hatch spoiler. On demand all wheel drive is anticipated to be one of the automobile’s options. Built on a Mitsubishi Lancer platform, the Caliber has been planned to go toe-to-toe with the VW Golf and Mazda three. The Caliber is predicted to debut in early 2006 as a 2007 model.

Nitro – Dodge gets a tiny SUV, the Nitro which is a rebadged and barely redone Jeep Liberty. As is customary with all contemporary Dodges, the Nitro sports the Dodge crosshair grille and unique wheel arches. The rest about the Nitro is predicted to be virtually the same as the Liberty including engine and transmission choices. The Nitro is expected to debut late in 2006.

Charger Coupe – O.K , I am dreaming. So are a lot of other people who are just itching for Dodge to release a two door version of the grand Charger. The word about Charger is this : half the folk like the sedan and the other half are disappointed it wasn’t developed as a coupe. No confirmation has been made, but a coupe may show up in late 2007 joining with [not replacing] the current sedan.

Love Those Vans – Chrysler is nearing the end of the life cycle for the present crop of minivans which still outsells any competitor on the market. Stow ‘N Go has been such a preferred hit that any revamp will be built around this neat feature. Expect the latest rendition of the Caravan and the Chrysler City and Country to show up some time in 2008.

So, there you have it. The division that at one time gave us the Aries K and Omni now has the Viper, Ram, Dakota, Durango, and a number of other exciting cars. Dodge fans are pinching themselves hoping that it’s not all a dream. Well, it isn’t and the imminent models promise to uphold Dodge’s new found place in The Chrysler Group.
