Auto Repair: What to Look for in an Auto Repair Shop

It is always best to find a great auto repair shop before your car breaks down. Most of the time as soon as your car breaks down you are just in a frantic to get it fixed and you will bring it anywhere. Here are a few questions or things to look for when you are trying to find that perfect auto repair shop.

Customer service is a very big part of any business. In an auto repair shop it can make or break the company. We like to know what is going on with our vehicles before any work is done. Look for a great auto repair shop that consults and freely answers any of your questions.

I also love looking up reviews on companies online. The Internet has really made finding out a lot about different company really easy. With the click of a button you can see what others have said and what they have experienced with any auto repair shop.

When you slowly narrow down your search also check out the experience and background that a company has. Usually you can find this information out on their website or with a quick call.

Many times customers will just ask about the price and not about other key issues, and they?ll go with the lowest price they can find. This can help save money right here and now, but it might not last as long as you would hope. Find a company that will walk you through all the parts and prices and don?t be afraid to pay more for better quality.

Look around online and find auto car shops and numbers. Call around and ask them for possible references, labor rates, warranty information, policies on customer satisfaction, and certifications. These are all important key elements that good auto repair shops know.

It is super important to look into warranties and customer satisfaction at different auto shops. This is your car and you need to feel secure with the work that they are doing on it.

Certifications are also important to know and ask about. You need to know that those that are working on your car have the experience and the education to know what they are doing.

Axles 101

As soon as my car start to make a noise that I haven’t heard before or even if it starts to feel a little different, I know it is telling me that something is wrong. I recently had problems with my axle and I was able to identify it through the noises that it was making. Here are a couple things that are good to know about your axle, including signs to look for if you may need any repairs.

If you are driving and you hear a clicking sound as you turn right or left, this could be a likely indicator that you have axel problems. Many times you can even hear this sound when your pulling your foot off the gas you’ll be able to hear this same noise.

If you find that the noise is more of a whining or a low rumble you can know it isn’t your axel but something else in your engine like a bearing unit.

Axles are a key part of your steering system, and as such are very important. Your axle can be more complicating that you may think. It is different with every car.

If you have a new car chances are you have a split axle. These are fantastic because they help make your ride nice and smooth. Each side of your car connects to a different shaft.

With a split axle, your wheels will actually move at different speeds as you turn a corner. This adds more than just comfort, but a sense of security and better traction. If you find yourself driving a lot on wet and slippery roads, this is something that can help.

Because axles are a key part of your steering and traction if you do find there is a problem don’t wait to get it repaired. It can be very hazardous to drive with your axle out of wack.

Don’t let distractions like music take away from time listening to how your car sounds. If you hear anything that is off your car is trying to tell you something. Listen to it, take care of it, and get it fixed sooner rather than later.

How to Change Spark Plugs

Recently, I was encouraged to get my spark plugs changed when a friend of mine was looking over my car. It made me start to wonder what exactly spark plugs do, and the whens and whys of changing them. Here are some things to help anyone else who is wondering the exact same thing.

Spark plugs are the keys to igniting your engine. They are what carry the spark to the engine and fuel, which gives your vehicle the kick that it needs to start.

When it comes to when and why you should change your spark plugs, there are a couple of different reasons why they need to be changed. Some people like to follow the mileage that is suggested by there vehicles manufacturing manual that comes with your car. If you want to really prevent and maintain your car, you’ll want to follow that manual.

Spark plugs, just like anything else in your vehicle, are going to work the best when used for the right amount of time. If you over use them you can experience increased emissions, rough idle, and loss of ideal performance and energy. Following the exact timing of your manufacturer’s vehicle manual may seem a naissance at times but it really is there to help you maintain a long lasting vehicle.

There are other reasons too that you have to change your spark plugs, these include fouled, worn, or spark plugs with bad wires. These are a bit harder to spot and most likely you will have to take your car to a local car shop to have them checked out. If you are very familiar with cars you will be bale to spot a certain firing pattern with your cylinders that will lead to why your spark plugs may or may not be functioning properly.

If your spark plugs age long enough you might not even be able to start your car. As they corrode over time they wont be able to ignite any spark and your engine will have to overwork to produce one.

If your car cranks but doesn’t start, the best thing to do is check your spark plugs. If you find that they are wearing out or are no longer working you have far passed the appropriate time to change them. You might want to bring it into a car shop to make sure that the spark plugs are truly the issue.

Spark plugs can also need to be tightened. Be careful with tightening them, and always make sure that you have checked the manufacturers manual for any additional requirements or warnings about spark plugs. If you don’t know how to change your spark plugs it is a very inexpensive service that most local car shops provide.

Shocks & Struts 101

When we think of shocks and struts on our car we usually think that the only job that they have are to provide a comfortable ride for us. But shocks and struts do a lot more for us than that. We’ll be reviewing exactly what shocks and struts do and how to know when they really need to be replaced.

When you experience bouncing and swaying as you drive, it can actually be a safety problem for the driver. We have more control the smoother the drive is. Shocks and struts aren’t just for comfort but for safety.

Many cars come with superior hydraulic shocks. These are amazing because they help the driver, as well as the passengers, feel so safe because they feel like they have control. They don’t have to worry about swaying or rocking because the drive is so tight.

Shocks and struts cause resistance by pushing oil through the valves in the piston as they work. This causes resistance because only a little oil is forced through and oil cannot be compressed.

Shocks and struts are only getting better as time goes. Many cars are now being built with shocks that use nitrogen gas instead of hydraulic fluid, this allows for an even tighter drive. This may seem like a little difference that is felt in a big way.

Good maintenance always allows for your engine and all it’s parts to last longer. Those that live in colder areas with a lot of ice, rain, and gravel are going to have to get their shocks and struts changed much sooner than those that don’t because of the adverse effects of the weather.

Do you have questions as to whether your shocks and struts need to be replaced? You will know the answer to that if you can feel every rock in the road or if your car bounces around too much when you pull up to a stop or turn. These are all major indicators that your shocks need to be looked at.

If you are experiencing any of the above, it is time to get your shocks and struts checked out. If you want to have an even nicer, smoother ride, check out getting some superior shocks and struts.

Performance from Muffler & Exhaust

Taking a road trip can be a lot of fun, but not if the enjoyment is short lived by loud noises from your muffler. It can cause a horrible ringing in your ears as well as making it difficult to talk to other passengers. Besides the loud noises there are other reasons why it is important to keep your eyes on your muffler and exhaust.

Mufflers do make driving your car a lot more enjoyable because they reduce the engine and exhaust noise. If out of no where your car doesn’t cut out any of the engine noise you know you need to have your exhaust system checked out. Mufflers are attached to your exhaust pipe and are not only in charge of reducing noise but keeping deadly gasses out of the passenger compartment.

Because of that, it is important to have your muffler checked out if you suspect anything. Because the exhaust can enter the car when the muffler is broken, it is so important that these types of problems aren’t put off.

If your car is loud but you find out that your exhaust system isn’t broken, you might just want to look into getting a new muffler anyway. One that will filter out the noise better. A great muffler can make all the difference.

Sometimes your loud engine noise can be due to a hole in your muffler. These can be patched up if they aren’t too big.

Cars that have a lot of muffler and exhaust problems can be those that are kept for long periods of time in garages. When you start driving them get them checked out immediately so that you can save money and avoid making them worse.

Just because you cannot hear any loud noises doesn’t mean that you don’t have any exhaust problems. Every time you go in for an oil change or other repairs you should have your exhaust checked out. It might only be a leak, but even these shouldn’t be ignored. This can cause carbon monoxide to build up in the passenger compartment.

Those that live in snowy areas often have to get more exhaust and muffler work done. The cold weather leaves condensation in the exhaust, but the exhaust never gets warm enough to evaporate anything. It can then cause exhaust corroding.

Making our cars last longer

It is a new day and time. The economy is different.  With it, most Americans don’t have as much money to spend as before.  In terms of the car industry you can see it.With the big three carmakers always losing money, you have proof that big items just aren’t being bought as much as before.

With that as a thought, a lot of Americans will be forced into having to keep their car a much longer times.Planning to keep a car for the long haul will require maintenance. The better you maintain your car is the longer life you will give it.  So I would like to offer a couple of tips from my experience owning a San Diego auto repair company.

One of those things that can be so easily passed over is making sure your car runs clean. Why is this important?Because if you aren’t able to keep it running clean you are in danger of failing the smog check. If you are not able to pass a smog check this could lead to very expensive repairs.  I have seen this time and time again from doing smog test San Diego.

All you will have to maintain is being sure that the oil is changed and oil filter changed regularly.  Also make sure you keep it tuned up with regular tune ups.

Second issue not handled all the time is taking care of your brakes. You don’t really watch for it as much as you should. But all can agree that it is very important for the safety of all.But if you are not diligent in caring for them, this will be an expensive repair.  I should know having to charge my clients to replace their brakes at my San Diego brakes shop.

Just make sure when you brake don’t be so rough on them. Be prepared for all your stops and then apply the brakes slowly. Also take care in making sure the brake fluids are at reasonable levels. This can help you save a bunch of money in repairs.

Do these few tips and you can be in for a lot of money saved in repairs.  When you have to keep your cars longer you will be glad you did.

Brakes 101

Lately I’ve been hearing my brakes squeaking really bad and I was wondering if it is time to get them fixed or if it would be okay to oil them up. That got me thinking about how important it is to maintain your brakes in excellent condition. So after some research here are some of the things I put together about maintaining your brakes.

First, if you want healthy brakes, brake fluid plays a major role in this. You want to make sure that you are checking everything about your brake fluid from the levels to the color.

When you are inspecting your brake fluid, if you notice that it has changed colors or is now fairly milky, it is time to change. Brake fluid, if it has gone bad, can ruin your master cylinder, a major part of your brake system.

If you feel up to the job you can change the brake fluid yourself, or you can go to a local brake shop. It can be a tiresome job doing it yourself and I wouldn’t recommend it if you haven’t done it before and don’t know much about cars.

First step in changing your brake fluid is what is called brake bleeding. This is a very important step that should never be skipped. You need to ‘bleed’ the brake lines to make sure that all the air bubbles get out.

This can be referred to as mushy or soft pedal. The air that builds up in your brake lines will actually prevent your breaks from working very well.

Some people can bleed their brakes by themselves but this usually isn’t recommended. It is a lot easier to do it with two people there. But if you really want to do it by yourself there are some great tools that can help you accomplish that.

Besides bleeding your brakes, it is important to be keeping a close eye on your pads and rotors. This can be done yourself or you can bring it into a shop to have them check it out. All you need to do is take of the tires and see if the pads have worn down to the point that you can barely see them.

It is always best that we maintain our cars so that in the long run we are saving money. A little money put into it here and there can save thousands in the future. If you want to learn more take your care to a local shop and ask them about ways that you can spot things early or maintain your brakes better.
