How To Adjust A Active Crossover
A high end audio system has a very essential integral part which is the crossover. This is used for maximum audio clarity. It can be done by filtering all audio signal by frequency and then they are directed to the correct amplifier and then to the speaker. There are two types of cross over. One is the active cross overs which gives a better clarity sound by proper adjustment and filtration of the audio signals. And the other is the passive cross over which is low adjustable and also produces low quality sounds. But how to set up active cross overs?
A three way crossover is typically used for audio systems in car. Therefore for setting up active crossover, the following things will be required: three way active crossover, a tri amped audio system, and few basic tools.
In the first step, the active crossover is mounted somewhere between the head unit of the stereo and the amplifiers of the system. There are two options of the location of the crossovers. If the crossovers do not have to be disturbed or adjusted after installing it, they can be placed below the panel of the dash. This way it cannot be disturbed. But in case the user wants it to be easily accessible for repairing, it can be placed below the seat or in trunk.
Then all the possible electrical connections are made. The crossovers run approximately for a dc voltage of about 12. A suitable connection to the battery is needed. Suitable Ground line should run to car’s chassis. Connection to the electrical signal which is switched by means of ignition should also run. It is done to prevent the battery getting drained while the car does not run. To know about wiring instructions, the literature should be consulted as it is a vital part in making the connection work properly.
The crossover low pass filter is set at 80HZ. This set up is required so that this one will allow the kick and bass drum through it. The above mentioned background is used for the routing between subwoofer amps and outputs.
The low pass of the crossover is set at 8o Hz. This ensures that sound below this frequency is passed to the subwoofer amplifier. The high pass is set at 3000Hz. This passes the sound above this frequency to the tweeters.
Next the band pass filter is set for the system’s midrange speakers. Then the amplifiers are set at low frequencies less than 80 Hertz also it is greater than 3000 HZ.
Then a typical music is played through the system and respective filters are adjusted so that it would match the amplifiers and speakers. If suppose one filter range is adjusted others also require the same to compensate for the one adjusted. If the low pass is changed to a value of 90 HZ then a change should be done on the band pass band pass to have the frequency at 90 HZ than to have a value of 80 though there is a chance for the overlap. Sometimes it may be useful which depends on the system. Thus the article shows how to set up active crossovers in a suitable place to adjust some problems occurring later. The frequency should also be checked that it should not damage the speakers.
